Billie Bond
Billie has been selected as one of the 2,400 people to take part in Antony Gormley's 2009 One & Other Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square, London on;
Saturday 5th Sept at 9-10pm
She will be plastering a prepared armature to make a sculpture of her sister who has Down's syndrome to raise awareness of her Active Arts course run by Mencap.
I have a sister who has Down’s syndrome. I recently saw her performing a dance to music on stage as a mermaid with her Mencap Active Arts performing and visual arts project.
For me it is very important for people with disabilities to be able to be involved and enjoy the arts. Since being selected for Antony Gormley’s, One and Other at Trafalgar Square, it has been the perfect opportunity for me to raise awareness of the importance of art for the disabled.

Active Arts is a performing and visual arts course for adults with learning disabilities run by Hastings & Bexhill Mencap Society. Active Arts students are taught by professional artists and performers. Courses include: Making for the Stage, Musical Theatre, Dance, Art and Design, Story making & illustration, and Comedy and Drama Improvisation.
"Our magnificent end of year show gives students an opportunity to showcase their skills in the performing arts, with the visual arts groups providing back-drops and props for the sketches. This is a community event open to the general public. Lively and energetic, the evenings entertainment leaves audiences wanting more, and with a positive view of what people with a learning disability have to offer.
Our visual artists also exhibit their work throughout the year and have taken part in Coastal Currents Art Festival and had work exhibited at Tate Modern, London." (Ann Bloomfield, Active Arts Co-ordinator)
Active Arts strives to raise the profile of artists and performers with a learning disability. Where possible they run classes in community spaces and collaborate with other artists.
Active Arts does not receive any core funding. Each year the project has to apply for funding.
Students also pay to attend classes.
