Clay to canvas

27/2/2015

My MA experimentations of painterly effects onto 3D plaster casts of my clay modelled selfie have inspired this painting onto canvas. The idea of re-presenting a portrait sculpture as a painting is to alter it's  image further from it's original reality. This could then inform a new style of sculpting from the painting - reverting the painting back into a 3D form - maybe this will be the future of my work.

Painted selfie plaster cast sculptures

This week's MA peer critique  presented me with an unexpected reaction. On one hand the shock and horror to how dare I pass off my painterly experiments as to look anything like a Rembrandt! (not that that was ever the intension) and (more interestingly) how the surface decoration altered the perception of the material - which was a far more constructive criticism. Now the surface decoration experiments are nearing completion I am now researching composition on portraiture - to include handle of neck in relation to shoulders, eye direction and hair style. These painted sculptures have inspired me to paint a sculpted head onto canvas - can't wait to get my brushes out again, I haven't painted to years.

Exploring colour and surface texture

Experimenting with painterly effects on plaster cast portrait sculpture selfie to see what affect it has on the appearance of the facial form and how these alterations can change the emotional response of its viewer.
The processes I am using have been inspired from icon portrait paintings in the hope that I can discover the secrets of their wonderment and enigma.
