The Clinker Connection

When Humans
changed Nature

SOLO EXHIBITION
 26TH JANUARY - 31 MARCH 2019
CHELMSFORD MUSEUM

The Clinker Connection - When Humans Changed Nature

.
Have you ever noticed those wonky brick walls topped with a gnarly burnt honeycomb rock that are dotted around the streets of Chelmsford?
This overlooked material, otherwise known as clinker has inspired this exhibition.

Clinker is the evidence left behind from the processes of industrial production and it is these gnarly nuggets of history that hold stories of progress and change.
With the idea of material, process and colour as metaphor, the work translates industrial ancestry, mass production and consumption.
This exhibition explores ideas of progress through metamorphosis of time and matter and aims to question its effect on our delicate environment.

Presented with an array of ceramic pieces, photography and a huge figurative installation piece, Billie Bond has drawn inspiration from the city's industrial heritage to today’s consumer culture, giving clinker an extended narrative beyond the garden wall.

'The Controlling of fire fuelled mass production.
with mass production came rapid change.
Rapid change is seen as progress
but there is no progress without regress'
